Summary of the movie

The movie begins with Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) leaving his home at Privet Drive for the last time. He is escorted by members of the Order of the Phoenix, who use Polyjuice Potion to disguise themselves as Harry's decoys. However, they are ambushed by Death Eaters, who are loyal to Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes). Harry manages to escape with his friend Hagrid (Robbie Coltrane), but not without casualties. He learns that Voldemort has taken over the Ministry of Magic and Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and that he is hunting for him.

Harry reunites with his best friends Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) and Hermione Granger (Emma Watson) at Ron's house. They decide to continue Dumbledore's (Michael Gambon) mission to find and destroy Voldemort's Horcruxes, which are fragments of his soul hidden in various objects. They also learn about the Deathly Hallows, which consist of an invisibility cloak, a resurrection stone, and an unbeatable wand. Whoever possesses all three hallows is said to be master of death.

The trio first visits Xenophilius Lovegood (Rhys Ifans), who tells them about a symbol that represents the hallows. However, he betrays them to Death Eaters in exchange for his kidnapped daughter Luna (Evanna Lynch). The trio escapes but loses their only clue to finding another Horcrux: a locket that belonged to Salazar Slytherin.

They manage to steal back the locket from Dolores Umbridge (Imelda Staunton), who works at the Ministry. They take turns wearing it around their necks while searching for a way to destroy it. However, they soon realize that it has a negative influence on their moods and emotions. It also shows them visions of their worst fears.

One night, while Harry is keeping watch, he sees a silver doe patronus that leads him to a frozen pond. He dives into it and finds a sword at its bottom. He tries to grab it but is pulled back by an invisible force. He realizes that it is actually Voldemort's soul inside him trying to stop him. He is saved by Ron, who returns after leaving them earlier due to an argument caused by wearing locket.

Ron uses his own sword to destroy locket but not before seeing a vision of Harry and Hermione kissing each other. He feels jealous but Harry assures him that they are just friends. They reconcile their friendship.

The trio then visits Godric's Hollow, where Harry was born and where his parents were killed by Voldemort. They hope to find another Horcrux there but instead encounter an old woman named Bathilda Bagshot (Hazel Douglas), who turns out to be Nagini (Voldemort's snake) in disguise. She attacks them but they manage to flee.

They are then captured by Snatchers led by Fenrir Greyback (Dave Legeno), who recognize Hermione as a Muggle-born witch wanted by Voldemort. They take them to Malfoy Manor where they are interrogated by Bellatrix Lestrange (Helena Bonham Carter). She tortures Hermione with her knife while asking her how she got her wand which actually belongs to her.

Meanwhile Harry communicates with Dobby (Toby Jones), a house elf who used work for Malfoys but now serves Harry after being freed by him years ago. Dobby apparates into manor helps free Harry Ron Hermione along with other prisoners such as Luna Ollivander (John Hurt) Griphook (Warwick Davis). They fight their way out but Dobby is fatally wounded by Bellatrix's knife thrown at him.

Harry buries Dobby on beach near Shell Cottage where they are staying with Bill Weasley (Domhnall Gleeson) Fleur Delacour (Clémence Poésy). He vows revenge against Voldemort swears never use another elf again.

He also learns from Ollivander that Voldemort is looking for Elder Wand one hallow which he believes will make him invincible. He also learns from Griphook that another Horcrux is hidden in Gringotts Wizarding Bank inside Lestrange vault.

The movie ends with Voldemort breaking into Dumbledore's tomb stealing Elder Wand raising it sky unleashing powerful lightning storm.

Some of the themes that the movie explores are:

  • Death: The movie deals with the inevitability and the impact of death, both on the individual and on the society. Harry faces his own mortality as he learns that he is a Horcrux and that he must die to destroy Voldemort. He also witnesses the deaths of many of his friends and allies, such as Dobby, Mad-Eye Moody, Hedwig, and others. He learns to accept death as a part of life and to honor the memory of those who died for him. The movie also shows how Voldemort's fear of death drives him to seek immortality through the Horcruxes and the Deathly Hallows, but at the cost of his humanity and his soul.

  • Loyalty: The movie shows how loyalty is tested and proven in times of crisis and danger. Harry, Ron, and Hermione remain loyal to each other and to their cause, despite their disagreements, doubts, and hardships. They also receive help from loyal friends, such as Dobby, Neville, Luna, and others. On the other hand, the movie also shows how some people betray their loyalties for selfish or cowardly reasons, such as Wormtail, Mundungus, Xenophilius, and others.

  • Friendship: The movie highlights the importance and the power of friendship in overcoming challenges and adversity. Harry, Ron, and Hermione rely on each other's strengths and support each other's weaknesses. They also share their joys and sorrows, their hopes and fears, their secrets and dreams. They grow closer as friends and as partners in their quest. The movie also shows how friendship can transcend differences and boundaries, such as between humans and non-humans (Dobby), between wizards and Muggles (the Dursleys), or between different houses (Gryffindor and Slytherin).

  • Courage: The movie demonstrates how courage is not the absence of fear, but the ability to act despite it. Harry shows courage by facing Voldemort and his enemies, by risking his life for his friends, by destroying the Horcruxes, by entering Godric's Hollow, by diving into the pond, by burying Dobby, by breaking into Gringotts, and by many other acts. He also inspires courage in others, such as Ron, Hermione, Neville, Luna, Ginny, and others. The movie also shows how courage can be found in unexpected places or people, such as in Dobby, Kreacher, Griphook, Ollivander, or even Draco Malfoy.

  • Sacrifice: The movie illustrates how sacrifice is often necessary to achieve a greater good or a higher purpose. Harry is willing to sacrifice himself to destroy Voldemort and save the wizarding world. He also witnesses the sacrifices of many others who die or suffer for him or for their cause, such as Dobby, Mad-Eye Moody, Hedwig, George Weasley, Bill Weasley, Fleur Delacour (Clémence Poésy), and Harry's parents. He learns to appreciate the value of sacrifice and to honor the memory of those who gave their lives for him or for their cause. The movie also shows how Voldemort's lack of understanding of sacrifice makes him vulnerable and weak, as he fails to recognize the power of Lily Potter's sacrifice for Harry, or the power of Harry's sacrifice for his friends.

  • Love: The movie depicts how love is the strongest and most powerful magic of all, capable of overcoming evil and death. Harry is protected by his mother's love, which lives on in his blood and his scar. He also experiences love in various forms, such as friendship, romance, family, and mentorship. He loves his friends, his girlfriend Ginny Weasley (Bonnie Wright), his godfather Sirius Black (Gary Oldman), his parents, and his mentor Dumbledore. He also learns to love himself and to accept his destiny. The movie also shows how love can be corrupted or twisted, such as in the case of Voldemort, who was conceived under a love potion and never knew love, or Bellatrix, who is obsessed with Voldemort and tortures Hermione out of jealousy.

FAQs

  • Q: How many Horcruxes are there and what are they?

  • A: A Horcrux is an object that contains a fragment of a person's soul, created by killing someone and splitting one's soul. Voldemort created seven Horcruxes in his attempt to become immortal. They are: his diary, which was destroyed by Harry in Chamber of Secrets; Marvolo Gaunt's ring, which was destroyed by Dumbledore in Half-Blood Prince; Salazar Slytherin's locket, which was destroyed by Ron in Deathly Hallows Part 1; Helga Hufflepuff's cup, which was destroyed by Hermione in Deathly Hallows Part 2; Rowena Ravenclaw's diadem, which was destroyed by Crabbe's fiendfyre in Deathly Hallows Part 2; Nagini, Voldemort's snake, which was killed by Neville in Deathly Hallows Part 2; and Harry himself, who was unknowingly made a Horcrux when Voldemort tried to kill him as a baby, but was freed from it when Voldemort hit him with the killing curse in Deathly Hallows Part 2.

  • Q: What are the Deathly Hallows and what do they do?

  • A: The Deathly Hallows are three legendary magical objects that are said to make the owner master of death. They are: the Elder Wand, the most powerful wand in existence, which can perform any spell and cannot be defeated by any other wand; the Resurrection Stone, a stone that can bring back the spirits of the dead, but not fully alive; and the Cloak of Invisibility, a cloak that can hide the wearer from any detection or harm. The hallows were created by the Peverell brothers, who received them from Death himself as a reward for cheating him. Harry is the descendant of Ignotus Peverell, the youngest brother who chose the cloak. Dumbledore possessed the elder wand and the stone at some point, but gave them to Harry before he died. Voldemort sought the elder wand to defeat Harry, but failed to realize that Harry was its true master.

  • Q: Who is R.A.B. and what did he do?

A: R.A.B. stands for Regulus Arcturus Black, Sirius Black's younger brother and a former Death Eater. He stole Slytherin's locket from Voldemort's hiding place and replaced it with a fake one, hoping to destroy it and weaken Voldemort. He also left a note inside the fake locket, taunting Voldemort and signing it as R.A.B. He died shortly after stealing the locket, as he was attacked by Inferi (reanimated corpses) guarding the cave where the locket was hid
